Job Purpose

The Security Coordinator is responsible for leading the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of INTERSOS Nigeria’s security framework. The role provides strategic guidance to senior management on risk mitigation, humanitarian access, staff safety, crisis preparedness, and emergency response mechanisms.

The successful candidate will ensure mission-wide compliance with INTERSOS security protocols, build staff capacity in risk management, and strengthen operational access and security systems across humanitarian programs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Security Strategy & Risk Management

  • Lead country-level security risk assessments and contingency planning processes.
  • Develop and implement mission-wide security policies, protocols, and risk management tools.
  • Ensure strong situational awareness through continuous monitoring of security incidents and humanitarian access constraints.
  • Analyze conflict trends and emerging threats affecting humanitarian operations.
  • Produce regular safety, security, and access analysis reports for senior leadership.

2. Staff Safety, Capacity Building & Security Management

  • Support recruitment, training, mentoring, and supervision of Security Managers, Security Officers, and focal points.
  • Build staff capacity on safety protocols, crisis management, and humanitarian security tools.
  • Conduct regular security briefings for international and national staff.
  • Organize weekly and monthly safety updates and contextual briefings.
  • Train staff on incident reporting, movement tracking, emergency communications, and security awareness.

3. Humanitarian Access & Networking

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with:
    • Government security agencies
    • Military and law enforcement bodies
    • UN agencies and humanitarian partners
    • NGO coordination forums such as INSO, EISF, and Saving Lives Together (SLT)
    • Community leaders and local stakeholders
  • Support humanitarian negotiations and access in conflict-sensitive locations.
  • Strengthen inter-agency collaboration and information sharing.

4. Communication Systems & Security Procedures

  • Review and improve communication systems and security coordination mechanisms across operational bases.
  • Ensure safety documents, movement tracking, contact lists, and emergency protocols remain updated.
  • Develop communication guidelines for handling sensitive security information.
  • Strengthen internal emergency communication channels.

5. Incident & Crisis Management

  • Ensure contingency plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) remain current and context appropriate.
  • Coordinate crisis response and incident management during emergencies.
  • Lead emergency response actions in security incidents.
  • Support the Head of Mission in decision-making related to operational safety.
  • Ensure continuity plans are in place to maintain humanitarian programming during disruptions.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Security Management
    • Social Sciences
    • Psychology
    • Human Rights
    • International Humanitarian Law
    • Humanitarian Studies
    • Risk Management
    • Related social development disciplines

Preferred Qualification

  • Master’s Degree in Humanitarian Studies, Security Management, Risk Management, International Relations, or related fields is highly desirable.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in humanitarian security management at Coordinator or Manager level.
  • Proven experience in complex humanitarian emergencies and conflict environments.
  • Experience managing humanitarian access, risk analysis, crisis response, and security systems.
  • Prior experience working in Northeast Nigeria or high-risk humanitarian settings is advantageous.

Salary:
Compensation is based on the INTERSOS International Salary Scale, role level, and candidate experience. Exact salary details are shared during the HR interview process.
