Job Overview
The Quantum Computing Research Engineer will join IBM Nigeria’s Research & Development team to design, develop, and validate quantum algorithms, software tools, and hardware prototypes. This role is pivotal in advancing IBM’s quantum roadmap, enabling clients to solve complex problems in cryptography, materials science, finance, and logistics. The engineer will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including quantum hardware engineers, software developers, and domain scientists, to translate theoretical concepts into practical applications. Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement quantum algorithms for real‑world applications in finance, chemistry, logistics, and cybersecurity.
- Develop and optimize quantum software libraries using Qiskit, OpenQASM, and other IBM quantum frameworks.
- Collaborate with hardware teams to benchmark quantum processors and improve error mitigation techniques.
- Conduct performance analysis, simulation, and validation of quantum circuits on both simulators and physical quantum devices.
- Publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals, conferences, and IBM internal knowledge bases.
- Mentor junior engineers and interns, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
- Engage with clients to understand business challenges and translate them into quantum‑ready solutions.
- Contribute to IBM’s open‑source quantum community by developing tutorials, sample code, and documentation.
Required Skills
- Deep expertise in quantum mechanics, quantum algorithms, and quantum error correction.
- Proficiency in Python and quantum programming frameworks such as Qiskit, Cirq, or PyQuil.
- Experience with high‑performance computing, numerical simulation, and linear algebra libraries.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with a track record of research publications or patents.
- Excellent communication skills for presenting complex concepts to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams across geographies.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus.
Education
A Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field with a focus on quantum computing or quantum information science is required. Candidates with a Master’s degree and demonstrable research contributions may also be considered.
Experience
Minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in quantum research, algorithm development, or related areas. Experience working in an industrial research environment or with enterprise clients is highly desirable.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from NGN 3,000,000 to NGN 5,000,000 per annum, commensurate with experience, expertise, and performance. Additional performance‑based bonuses and equity incentives may be offered.
