Job Overview

The Environmental Compliance Manager will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of environmental policies and procedures across all mining operations in the Abakaliki region. This role is pivotal in ensuring that AngloGold Ashanti Nigeria meets and exceeds local, national, and international environmental regulations. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and update the Environmental Management System (EMS) to align with ISO 14001 standards and Nigerian environmental legislation.
• Conduct regular environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and ensure mitigation measures are effectively implemented.
• Lead internal and external environmental audits, preparing comprehensive reports and corrective action plans.
• Monitor air, water, and soil quality parameters, maintaining accurate records and reporting to regulatory bodies.
• Provide technical guidance to mining engineers and contractors on best practices for waste management, tailings disposal, and land reclamation.
• Engage with local communities, NGOs, and government agencies to address environmental concerns and promote transparent communication.
• Prepare and submit all required environmental permits, licenses, and compliance documentation.
• Develop and deliver training programs on environmental awareness and compliance for all staff levels.
• Track emerging environmental regulations and industry trends, recommending proactive adjustments to company policies.
• Support the preparation of sustainability reports and contribute to corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of Nigerian environmental laws, mining regulations, and international standards (ISO 14001, GRI).
• Proven experience in conducting EIAs, audits, and compliance monitoring.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a data‑driven mindset.
• Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Proficiency in environmental monitoring software and GIS tools.
• High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to sustainable practices.

Education

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor are highly desirable.

Experience

Applicants must have 5‑7 years of relevant experience in environmental compliance within the mining or heavy‑industry sector. Experience managing large‑scale projects, conducting audits, and interacting with regulatory authorities is essential.

Salary
