Job Overview
The Field Service Engineer will be the frontline technical expert responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Caterpillar construction equipment deployed across the southwestern region of Nigeria. This role demands a blend of technical acumen, customer‑focused communication, and the ability to work independently in diverse field conditions. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with sales, parts, and training teams to ensure equipment uptime, optimize performance, and uphold Caterpillar’s reputation for reliability and service excellence. Key Responsibilities
- Perform on‑site installation, commissioning, and preventive maintenance of Caterpillar excavators, loaders, bulldozers, and related equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults using OEM diagnostic tools and software.
- Execute corrective repairs, part replacements, and system calibrations to restore equipment to optimal condition.
- Maintain accurate service records, technical reports, and parts usage logs in accordance with company standards.
- Provide technical guidance and training to customer operators and junior service technicians.
- Collaborate with the parts department to ensure timely availability of spares and manage inventory levels.
- Identify recurring issues and recommend design or process improvements to engineering and product development teams.
- Adhere to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and company policies during all field activities.
- Support sales teams by delivering technical presentations, equipment demonstrations, and solution proposals.
- Participate in on‑call rotation to provide emergency support for critical equipment breakdowns.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electronic control modules.
- Proficiency with Caterpillar’s diagnostic software (e.g., Cat® Connect, Cat® Service Advisor).
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities and a methodical approach to troubleshooting.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with clients, colleagues, and management.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.
- Physical fitness and willingness to work in challenging environments, including construction sites and remote locations.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate documentation.
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on new equipment technologies.
Education
A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field is required. Relevant certifications such as CAT® Service Technician, ISO 9001, or OSHA safety training are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience servicing heavy construction equipment, preferably with exposure to Caterpillar or other OEM brands. Experience in a field service or mobile maintenance role, including travel across multiple sites, is essential.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from NGN 2,500,000 to NGN 3,500,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, pension contributions, and a company vehicle for field duties.
