Job Overview

The Pharmacovigilance Scientist will join the Drug Safety department to ensure the continuous monitoring, assessment, and reporting of adverse events associated with Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceutical products marketed in Nigeria. The role is pivotal in safeguarding patient health, complying with local and international regulatory requirements, and supporting the company’s commitment to high‑quality, safe medicines. As part of the broader Hiring in Nigeria initiative, the successful candidate will work closely with Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, and Global Pharmacovigilance teams to ensure timely and accurate safety data flow. Key Responsibilities

• Collect, evaluate, and process individual case safety reports (ICSRs) from healthcare professionals, patients, and internal sources.
• Perform causality assessment, seriousness classification, and narrative writing for each adverse event.
• Prepare and submit periodic safety update reports (PSURs) and development safety update reports (DSURs) to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other relevant authorities.
• Collaborate with Global Pharmacovigilance to ensure alignment with international safety standards and guidelines.
• Maintain and update the company’s safety database, ensuring data integrity and compliance with Good Pharmacovigilance Practices (GVP).
• Provide safety signal detection, data mining, and trend analysis to identify emerging risks.
• Support the preparation of risk management plans, safety communication materials, and labeling updates.
• Participate in cross‑functional meetings, providing safety expertise to product development and marketing teams.
• Assist in training internal staff on pharmacovigilance processes and regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to audit readiness and support internal and external inspections.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of pharmacovigilance regulations in Nigeria and internationally (ICH, FDA, EMA).
• Proficiency in safety database systems (e.g., Argus, Arisg).
• Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear safety narratives.
• Detail‑oriented mindset with a commitment to data accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel for data analysis.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.

Education

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Medicine, or a related scientific discipline. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Pharmacovigilance Professional) are highly desirable and demonstrate a commitment to professional development.

Experience
